MESA Smart Manufacturing Community: Digital Thread/Digital Twin

Wednesday, February 4, 2026 (11:00 AM - 12:00 PM) (EST)

Description

Come share your experiences, stories, questions, and what you have learned in a safe, non-commercial environment. We seek to understand the state of the market, understand what companies have done that has or has not worked, documenting questions that MESA and the community can help answer. Overall, the goal is to accelerate each participant’s learning and progress toward Smart Manufacturing.

Topic: Edge Computing and Digital Twins - How edge computing can enhance the performance of digital twins by processing data closer to the source, reducing latency and bandwidth use.

Edge computing is emerging as a key enabler for scalable and responsive digital twin implementations. By processing data closer to the source—such as sensors, machines, and industrial assets—edge computing significantly reduces latency, minimizes bandwidth consumption, and improves real-time decision-making. This localized computation allows digital twins to operate with higher fidelity and faster feedback loops, which is especially critical in time-sensitive environments like manufacturing, energy, and smart infrastructure. Integrating edge computing with digital twins enhances system resilience, supports real-time analytics, and enables more efficient synchronization between physical and virtual assets.

Learn from each other as we discuss:

  1. How does edge computing reduce latency and improve real-time responsiveness in digital twin systems?
  2. What types of digital twin workloads are best suited for edge-based processing versus cloud-based processing?
  3. How does edge computing help optimize bandwidth usage in data-intensive digital twin applications?
  4. What architectural models effectively integrate edge, cloud, and digital twin platforms?
  5. What challenges arise in managing data consistency and synchronization between edge nodes and centralized digital twins?
  6. How can edge-enabled digital twins improve predictive maintenance and operational decision-making in industrial environments?
