We seek to understand the state of the market, understand what companies have done that has or has not worked, documenting questions that MESA and the community can help answer. Overall, the goal is to accelerate each participant’s learning and progress toward Smart Manufacturing. 

Topic: Techniques for operations/maintenance worker enablement in Smart Manufacturing

The manufacturing industry continues to lose skilled labor due to aging of the workforce and other economic drivers. It is increasingly difficult to find and train skilled workers to back-fill retirees - in 2021, for example, the US department of labor reported 425,000 openings across the country for machinists and tool and die makers (World Economic Forum – “Empowering the next-generation manufacturing workforce through AR innovation”. According to EY, by 2030 this number will grow to 2.1 million world-wide if the skills gap is not addressed. Technologies are emerging, such as AR, VR and Connected Worker platforms, that can help with both training and productivity of new workers. 

In this discussion, we would like to explore the reality and promise of these technologies, and other options, covering questions such as:

• What is your current approach to O&M worker enablement?
• Are you using, or considering using, AR/VR technologies for worker enablement?
• What is your experience in this area, if you are?
• Do you think that emerging connected worker offerings help here? What about MES?
• Are there other emerging approaches that you are considering?
• And anything else you would like to discuss.
