We seek to understand the state of the market, understand what companies have done that has or has not worked, documenting questions that MESA and the community can help answer. Overall, the goal is to accelerate each participant’s learning and progress toward Smart Manufacturing. 

Topic: How does Cloud Play in a Smart Connected Factory?

A recent survey by Deloitte* indicates that Cloud Computing is a top investment area for Smart Manufacturing. This is somewhat surprising given manufacturers historical reluctance to “run the factory” from the Cloud.  Is this reluctance finally shifting, or is this really investment in ancillary functions and not a shift in the apprehension about using the Cloud for factory operations?

In the discussion we will try to answer questions such as:

1. Is your usage of Cloud for Smart Manufacturing increasing, as this survey suggests?
2. What are the Smart Manufacturing functions that you either have on the Cloud now, or are considering for the Cloud?
3. If you are considering the Cloud for Smart Manufacturing, why are you considering it – cost, or something else?
4. Do you think greater use of the Cloud for Smart Manufacturing requires, or supports, increased use of the “Edge” for Smart Manufacturing?
