MESA Smart Manufacturing Community: Smart Connected Supply Chain

MESA Smart Manufacturing Community: Smart Connected Supply Chain

Wednesday, October 2, 2024 (11:00 AM - 12:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Come share your experiences, stories, questions, and what you have learned in a safe, non-commercial environment. We seek to understand the state-of-the market, understand what companies have done that has or has not worked, documenting questions that MESA and the community can help answer. Overall, the goal is to accelerate each participant’s learning and progress toward Smart Manufacturing.

Topic: Dynamic Scheduling: Is it Possible?

Supply Chain solutions start with a forecast and order stream and create a production plan. This plan is submitted to production. Then, typically, “Murphy” jumps in and things cannot go exactly as planned. Skilled employees may be absent, a machine goes down, materials do not arrive or arrive but are not up to spec, or other orders end up on the planned equipment. How do you dynamically manage production by rescheduling machines, people, etc. to still deliver as close as possible on time per the plan?

  • How do you shuffle and reallocate the resources to deliver as close as possible to what was requested?
  • Does anyone use software that can consider the current status of the plant, skills and availability of people, status of product in the pieces of equipment in all of the variations to reschedule?
  • What are the differences between discrete, batch, and process industries for dynamic production scheduling?
  • What does agility – or changing as conditions change – mean in your facilities? Can you achieve it, or is it just chaotic firefighting?
  • How dynamic can you be, and what are the consequences when you cannot meet the plan?

Please come and discuss your experiences. This question came from a newer manufacturing member in our group, so I hope you will come and share your perspectives and examples.
